We will be assisting the local church, approximately seventy parishes,
under the direction of Bishop Edward Muhima, minister to the needs
of the people in their district. We have begun working with him
on three projects.
Orphans
and Child headed home project
We are assisting one child headed family. This is a pilot project
that will help us determine how we can best address and assist
with the horrific problem of children heading their own homes
after AIDS or other diseases take their family. As most are aware,
AIDS is at pandemic levels in Africa. Over 2 million children
are orphaned due to AIDS in Uganda alone. The more horrific problem
is that these children, if they have lost their entire family,
are left to fend for them selves. That was the situation for this
first family that we are assisting. Alone since the tender ages
of 8 and 6, Daniel and Dorcus were in a desperate situation. They
were no longer able to be children; they had been forced to learn
how to survive. With the assistance of Mosaic Vision, the church
at Rwerere stepped in to help. The church is currently looking
to bring a widow into this home to care for these children full
time. When that occurs, Daniel will be able to return to school
and Dorcus will be able to get the medications and healthcare
that she needs. We will watch and learn from this first home how
we can best reach out to other children in the same situation.
We want these children to know that even though they have been
abandoned, that God will never abandon them, that He has written
their names on the palm of His hand.
Orphan Assistance
Bishop Muhima’s wife, Vashti told us about a woman in Rukingiri
that is caring for over 100 orphans. Through the local church,
we have begun assisting this saint of a woman care, educate, and
feed these little ones.
Water project
Contaminated water is a major health problem in Uganda, especially
for children and the elderly. A typical village gets its water
from a local pond or contaminated stream. Children are responsible
for collecting water for their families on a daily basis. In some
cases these children have to walk up to three miles each direction
to get water for their families. In stead of spending time in
school, these children walk for hours each day to retrieve water.
Additionally, the water that they retrieve is often unfit to drink
and causes illnesses due to water borne pathogens. God, however,
provides abundant pure and healthy water to drink in the form
of rain. While visiting Uganda, we observed a program implemented
by the church that taught villagers how to build tanks that were
used to collect rain water. As we watched women come together
to build these tanks for each others homes we became filled with
hope. We have begun investigating how we can work together with
the people of Rukingiri to replicate this innovative program in
their district. The knowledge and the desire are there. These
people simply lack the resources necessary to get this program
started. We believe that this is where Mosaic Vision can help.
